Crowd surge?
System of a down?
no accounting for taste.
I prefer a bit of Craaaaaaiiiiig Daaaaaavid.

BBC NEWS | Health | Ten years 'trapped in hospital':
"Bureaucratic wrangles meant a woman with learning difficulties was forced to spend 10 unnecessary years in a mental hospital.
Her ordeal started in 1990, when she was sent to the hospital for treatment.
She could have been transferred shortly afterwards to a private home, but there were arguments over who should pay - and she did not leave until 2001. "
Am I the only person upset by this? 10 years. She's getting 20k by the way. 2 grand a year. £5.30 a day fro every day she spent in a mental hosptial when she should have been moved to a nursing home.
Can you imagine how that feels? Of course not.

BBC NEWS | Education | A tale of midsummer madness:
"So we have had another bout of August madness. It must be something to do with the combination of exam results and the summer heat. The media just seem to lose their usual sense of perspective. "
This from a man who is, by definition, a member of the media.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

audi olympics
audi olympics: "Loving parents of an Audiville man who may have only 40 years to live have launched a public appeal to buy him an Audi TT. Forty-year-old Nigel Graber, known as Nige, was born with Fiscal Atrophy. Doctors have warned he may never own a fast car, have a decent holiday or wear Lacoste. Privately, specialists fear the crippling disease may mean he has to work for a further 25 years. Nigel has limited social skills, and is sometimes slow to the net.
He is, however, bright as a button, with a reading age of 38. Nigel’s parents want their son to have as much independence as possible in his remaining years. “That’s why we want the TT. Nigel has limited social skills, but he has indicated, through simple body language, that he would prefer the premium package with the heated seats and lights, the CD-based navigation system and the Bose ICE pack,” says his mum.
Family and friends have already started to rally round to help raise the necessary on-the-road price of £28,000.
Help make a wish come true
An Audi TT may be out of your reach, but you can pledge money to the Royal Bank of Scotland today. Just £25 would buy a night out at Pizza Hut; £50 would get Nigel some much-needed straight-leg, boot-cut Kirano jeans, while £1,000 will buy a Denon AVF 100/S home cinema."

From Baghdad Burning (on Iraq, from Iraq, by an Iraqi)
Baghdad Burning: "The UN building explosion is horrible... terrifying and saddening. No one can believe it has happened... no one understands why it was chosen. For God's sake these people are supposed to be here to help.
I'm so angry and frustrated. Nothing is moving forward- there is NO progress and this is just an example. The media is claiming Al-Qaeda. God damn, we never HAD Al-Qaeda before this occupation... fundamentalists kept their heads down. Now they are EVERYWHERE- they 'represent' the Iraqi people on Bremer's puppet council...
You know what? Something like this could never happen to the Ministry of Oil. The Ministry of Oil is being guarded 24/7 by tanks and troops. It has been guarded ever since the fall of Baghdad and will continue under Bremer's watchful eye until every last drop of oil is gone. "

"Blog? wtf is a blog?"
Blog makes it into the Oxford English Dictionary.
As usual whenever new words are included the learned and wise complain and say things like "surely that's not a proper word" as though new words could only be thought up by men with beards.
The Friday Thing News Blog covers this in more detail.
But basically it boils down to this quote:
"Apparently, blog is in The Dictionary now - well, I don't even know what one is!".
Yes, and for that you would... wait for it..... USE A FUCKING DICTIONARY!!!!.
(pretty much lifted from TFTNB but I gave them a mention and link so they won't sue. Probably).

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Iceland hunters kill whale:
"The United States has expressed 'extreme disappointment' over the killing, which it has warned could trigger a trade embargo against the country. "
This from a country which invades at the drop of a hat and basically ignores the Kyoto agreement and has absolutley no plans to reduce levels of emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2010, although that's exactly what they promised to do.
Still, if you elect a monkey to the White House, what do you expect?

The study, which is being run by the Medical Research Council, aims to find out if the drug really can help to relieve pain.
Scientists will randomly select 400 patients from 36 hospitals across England to take part in the study.
They will be given one of four pills after undergoing surgery, two of which will be a form of cannabis. "
Thank God for that! Finally a sensible study on legit uses of cannabis.

And I'm sure the 6000 dead Iraqi civilians would say the same about the coalition's invasion Kofi. Except of course they're dead.
What did you expect??! Did you really think everyone was going to roll over and love the US occupation?
We in the UK have seen this before, it's was called Belfast and we had to do it for 30 years before we got anywhere. Good luck.
Of course I'm sorry people have been killed, but I'm not surprised in the least. There could be decades of this to come.

BBC NEWS | Health | HIV heterosexual infections soar
BBC NEWS | Health | HIV heterosexual infections soar:
"The number of heterosexual patients diagnosed with HIV has jumped sharply since the beginning of this year, official figures reveal.
The figures also show that two out of three of these people probably contracted the virus in Africa.
For the first time, twice as many heterosexual than homosexual patients are now being told they have the disease. "
This is because homosexuals, queers, whatever you want to call them actually *understand* the issue and have had a much better attitude to safe sex for years, if not decades now.
Also, anyone who has unprotected sex with anyone else while they are in Africa really ought to know better. I mean, I know it's a shame and everything but FFS parts of Africa have a 50% infected rate. You'd have to be mental to have unsafe sex there.
